Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the option to contest particular decisions made by the official, echoing the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
